Introducing the “Miss Direction Quilt” pattern

When it comes to quilt patterns, what is the better than 1 quilt design? 3 quilt designs. And even better is 3 quilt designs, all from 1 beginner quilt block! The Miss Direction Quilt pattern was inspired by the beginning of a New Year, and the resolutions and aspirations that often come with it. Whether or not you make annual resolutions, personal growth is a universal goal of most creatives.

3 designs- 1 pattern!

This quilt pattern is designed to be a visual illustration of that growth trajectory—will this year’s evolution be directed outward, inward, or toward consistency? The 3 quilt versions utilize the same base block with alternating rotations to create 3 contrasting designs. As a quilter, you choose the arrangement that resonates with your vision for this year. Is it Outbound—with the ambition of external accomplishments? Inbound—a goal of internal growth? or Homebound— focused intention toward maintaining past progress and developing contentment? The best part is, there’s no wrong answer!

Because of its simplicity, the Miss Direction Quilt pattern is very beginner friendly. The half-square-triangles (HSTs) are large and easy to piece, visual diagrams are included for each step of assembly, a coloring page is provided, as well as a glossary of quilting terms. The pattern offers 3 sizing options—Baby, Throw, and Queen—with equivalent fabric requirements for each version. There are 3 colorways utilized in the original designs from which to pull inspiration; if you love the colors of Homebound, but prefer the arrangement of Inbound, the fabric requirements are interchangeable.

Outbound- Kit available at Lamb and Loom Fabrics

Speaking of fabric requirements and colorways: the yardage requirements are listed below and we have 3 lovely fabric shops offering kits to coordinate with versions pictured.

Outbound: This fabric pull was a bit outside my comfort zone, but turned out to be a high risk—high reward scenario. Appropriate for the version that it was used in! It includes 3 busy prints and only 1 solid, but somehow as the fabric came together it created the most calming combination. If you need a last minute baby quilt, these florals feel soft and feminine without overwhelming the design. Linli at Lamb and Loom Fabrics has all 4 fabrics in stock, and kits available for the Throw size version of all 3 designs.

Inbound- Kit available at Cottoneer

Inbound: This colorway was all about texture. The woven fabrics from Andrea at Cottoneer bring so much movement and character to the design. The Outbound palette also offers a masculine contrast to the feminine prints featured in Inbound. If you’ve followed interior design trends over the past couple of years, there’s been a shift from stark, clean aesthetics to embracing of texture, upcycling, and antique pieces. Woven fabrics and linens are a quilter’s way of incorporating that feeling of age and tradition into a modern, new quilt—the earthy fabrics bring a sense of wear and experience to a brand new project.

Homebound- Kit available at Pasadena Quilt Studio

Homebound: Solids are my comfort zone. This earthy color palette feels like home—it could be comfortable in the mountains or the desert (which is serendipitous as we recently relocated from the deserty Southwest to the hills of Northern Wyoming). My sweet quilty friend Jennyth at Pasadena Quilt Studio has all 4 solids in stock in her online store!
